A LUCKY MAN!

I am a lucky man. Why? Growing up listening to bands like Toto, Yes, journey and others, I decided at a young age that music was my passion! I played in bands and toured Europe, rubbing shoulders with some amazing artists and industry people along the way. I always wondered where it would take me. Today, at 49 years old, I am right where I was meant to be. Oh yes, for sure, I don’t play the bass like I used to, but hey, I have much to be thankful for. A 12 year old son who is the core of value in my life! Healthy parents at 81 years old!!!!! A girl that lights up my life every day and oh ya, I get the privilege of passing my contacts, knowledge and help to artists all over the world.! I am working on 6-8 international tours, working with EVERCLEAR  manager Paul Marshall, Stephen Wrench, founding member of Lynyrd Skynrd, a great team of professionals, sponsors and so many wonderful people, it would take forever to mention. Roger Daltry says the music business is dead! Ummmmm what? Not from where I sit. You see, the problem with that statement is that to me, if Roger is looking for things to be the way they were when he was in his prime, then it IS dead. However, I think it is merely changing and HE is dead! What are you making music for Roger??? Money only? I think you should slide over and let the next generation decide on how they will shape the business going forward. After the Titanic went down, we did not stop building ships, we simply learned how to build them better! That’s what is now happening! We are learning how to use the new world technology and it takes time to regulate. Back to why I am a lucky man. As the industry grows and changes, I am thankful that I can use my mind and talents in music. Every day is an adventure and no two days are the same. To me, that is why I am a lucky man.

Lance King’s The Country Beat

This has certainly been a very exciting past few months for me personally with the US and International success of my Stephen Wrench (Grammy nominated producer) produced the song “Love You All The Way”.  Recorded in Nashville the musicians were from such notable groups as Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Luke Bryan, Brooks and Dunn Stephen molded the song into a formidable contender to go up against the top Country Music artist in the Industry. “Love You All The Way” has spent the last 11 weeks on either The Euro Indie Music Charts peaking at # 12 or on The Digital Radio Tracker Charts peaking at #23 on the US National Top 50 Country Chart. Both charting companies chart 1000’s of stations World Wide. Seeing my name on the charts between Blake Shelton and Kenny Chesney was a super big thrill. One week I was enjoying that fact that I was on top of Carrie Underwood (musically speaking of course) and my, Toni-Anne wife replied “In Your Dreams.”

At the end of March Toni-Anne and I traveled back to Nashville where we met up with my producer, Stephen Wrench and we recorded 6 new songs. The first release from that session is “Driftin” which was written by my Dad, B.C. Country Music Association hall of fame member Ed King. He had success with the song about 20 years ago but a good song, is a good song, is a good song. Stephen and I really liked the song so we used mandolin in it and it turned out so well it became first out of the gate. We plan to release the next 5 in 10 to 12 week intervals.

With the success of “Love You All The Way” and the anticipated success of “Driftin” the push is on to find booking agents to help find me suitable bookings in Canada as well as abroad. Because of the songs US success I am also working on obtaining a US work visa and a green card. I am also anticipating a very successful “Rise Up Tour 2016” show in White Rock on Saturday May 7th with my co-host and friend Delaney Rose. Delaney has put together a fantastic line up of guests for this show and it is my understanding that ticket sales are brisk.

Well it’s time to go vacuum my pool so for now I’ll just say Thank-you Mark (of Rosner Management) for helping me to organize a plan to succeed in this magical business we call the music business. Thank-you Stephen for making my music sound fantastic and Thank-you Musik and Film Records for getting my music out there and getting it played.
I’m Lance King and this is my blog: The Country Beat.

Thanks, Lance

Artists go through many times during they're development that feel uncomfortable!
Putting on shows, developing systems of promotion, learning new tools in social media, even just the process of believing you can do something and grow and stretch yourself. During this process, always remember what this gentleman is saying and you will continue to make progress, even if sometimes it doesn't FEEL like it!

OPTIMISTIC SPRINKLE

You know how it can be difficult to be aware of and feel your own progress when you are living your own life day to day? You fear you are running in place. Well nobody should ever feel alone in that, I'VE been there and still struggle with it at times. However this month has been a whirlwind of new experiences and progression that has proved to be scary and overwhelming but also new and exciting! My EP, 'Bending Hearts', is officially out and ready for eager ears. It's available on my website under the music tab.http://www.johannawinkel.com/ it's my baby so I've been wicked excited about it but truthfully not quite as excited as I am about this next EP that I am in the process of mixing now. I am calling it 'Shadow'. My 'Shadow' EP is one of heartbreak, confusion, pain, inspiration, new love, strength and self discovery. My goal is to have it out within the next months time!Another recent exciting development is I have my very own Publicist now, WOW?!

Her name is Tracy Lamourie of Lamourie Public Relations, I met her through my wonderful manager Mark Rosner of Rosner Management.I have been stretched out of my comfort zone and it feels fantastic! Working together with her now to really get myself out there in every avenue for my talents and passions. I will be featured in two magazines coming up, more on that as it develops in the near future, also crowd funding and hopefully late summer tour!I am so very grateful to both Tracy and Mark and I know this is going to be an exciting year.Speaking of Mark Rosner, he is developing this new network called Music Sponsors Network and I feel honored to now be a part of it. It's brilliant and going to help many artists including myself.

More on that later as it reveals. Now bouncing over to the acting performance part of my carreer!I have a couple of indie films coming out this year. One of which is called 'Max And Chase' which I recently took a trip to St. Louis to do some ADR work for. ADR is where you go into a studio and watch yourself on a screen in a scene and re-record your dialogue in the studio that didn't record very well live on the actual shoot date.((I hope that made sense??))  heheI have always been one who has extraordinary attention to detail and I am definitely a perfectionist so this was a challenging and awesome experience.

As you watch yourself you really have to put yourself back into that scene, that moment, that world, that day, and make it as real as you can for both yourself and the audience, who will eventually be watching the film. The last thing you would want is for anyone to pick out that your voice doesn't sound terribly authentic in one particular scene. There was sweat and tears but I feel I executed it to the best of my ability and that is the one rewarding feeling that keeps us all going, am I right?  I think YES!To wrap it all up,

I've completed a new song that I am calling 'Sand In My boots'.Have you ever gone on the perfect vacation or fallen so deep into an intoxicating fantasy dream type of love that you felt as if you were on vacation and never wanted to return but had to and then you face that inevitable  day-after-christmas-feeling?Well THAT'S what this next tune of mine is about but I have given it a sort of optimistic sprinkle at the end.I mean, after all... don't we all need a little optimistic sprinkle? I know I do!Life is supposed to be fun and invigorating! Not exhausting. I simply feel it shouldn't be 'little work and no play'  but rather  'Lots of play!!'    ;-P

Why are Music and Arts Important ?

WHY ARE MUSIC AND THE ARTS IMPORTANT! Our society as a whole needs to police itself. The government cannot be trusted to provide good leadership here. Artists are now taking it on themselves, doing crowd funding and many other avenues to conduct business. Do not discourage artists from pursuing whatever they need to keep culture alive. The next time you look down upon an artist for crowd funding or asking you to purchase music, see them live, or share their art form, remember.....Do we want a society without music, culture and art? Or are we content to let our children slip into a never ending electronic world of make believe!!!! #cantcountongovernmentsupport?

Thanks

The First Blog

Hi!

Here is my FIRST BLOG EVER !

Everybody has a passion, whether or not they are aware of it or allow it to reveal itself. My passion? Music, singing, performing, songwriting, basically everything, that whole artsy thing. All of my songs are centered around people, friends, family, life situations and....GUYS....who will have to remain nameless as we progress into my personal musical life and these blogs. It started when I was little. If there was anything I felt strongly about I would sing about it, whether it was curled up under a table, or dancing across an amateur auditorium stage. When I got older, I discovered GUYS, and thats when the songs began to flow out of me. Guys can be infuriating, disappointing, scary, stimulating, exciting, fun, heart breaking, the list goes on, as i'm sure all you ladies can agree.

I was hesitant to show my songs to the world, to the big scary music executive men in suits, to be more specific. I finally forced myself to and its been scary, but exciting. The game really changed, when I recently signed with Stephen Wrench at Musik & Film Records. I will soon be meeting more of his team, and connections, to follow in my next blog. I feel like I am starting to get on track but still a little uncertain.

You know that feeling when you are climbing up the ladder to the high dive at the pool and you are holding your breathe the whole way up because you are scared of this new confidence you have while also debating bailing and climbing back down to safe ground or what you might find at the top? If you will make a mistake, get let down in utter disappointment or achieve your greatest desires and get a taste of the kind of success you dream of? Well that's where I am at. And it helps to know that I am not alone, none of us are. I can't wait to see what happens next! It's important to always believe in yourself and remember that life is a journey, not a destination.
So,  to be continued... ;-P

Don't Look Back

Life....well that's just it isn't it... Life... Life can be complicated, or everything can go smoothly. The ups, the downs, the sadness, the happiness, mistakes, and accomplishments. You name it. Life will throw it at you...A lot as well...I'm noticing to lately that more and more people live in the past. With regrets about what was done, Time that was wasted.

It's easy to get sucked into you're thoughts like a vacuum has pulled you into the darkness, and your thoughts are cluttered together in the vacuum's container. This is something I am all to familiar with. It is difficult to get out of these thoughts at times and focus on what's important....So my word to you is this. Don't look back, Don't look back at what was and envision what can be. Stop trying to change what cannot be changed, but accept the card's you've been dealt with and work with them.

Create the life you envision, and help other's embrace this ideal, and their own idea's. Take what you went through as a lesson to learn from. Being human doesn't mean at all in any definition, being perfect. We all go through crazy things and let it consume our future. Let it dictate who we become. Why? If something didn't work for you, then don't do it again, if you made a mistake, learn from it, and don't do it again.

Don't repeat process's that are clearly faltering. With kindness in you're heart, and an ambitious mind developed, go forward and CREATE. You are the Creator, don't let what was break you.

Don't look back.

In The Age OF Web 2.0

Creation, business & getting your music heard… in the age of the web 2.0

I must admit, this is my first blog. Still, being a (part-time) journalist in real life (or let’s say beside music), l’ll try to get to the point and sell you my ideas, or let’s say, my product: music.

I always knew, beginning my artistic studies - yeah l’m also a cinema teacher when there is jobs out there - that I won’t live to make money, but to make art. Expressing myself is vital, (as well as eating yeah!) Writing, teaching, singing, require the same abilities - for me: having something to say and saying it in an interesting way (OK if it’s to students in a classroom, readers in a magazine, or drunk people in a bar, the means of communications are pretty much different, but if it’s not interesting, the message won’t get  heard anyway…(Today, you have to be more interesting than a cellphone -or Facebook, or Twitter, or Angry Birds, etc.- and unfortunately, the challenge is there…)

In music, yeah, I do have something to say.

My passion for music have been consistent for the last decade & I always followed my own path as a singer-songwriter, launching in 2014 my debut album called Confessions, a 12 track album, in my native French speaking language. Thanks to Gilbert Cantin, my great friend & composer through this journey. I remember the time when I went to France & Belgium to sing some of my original material. It turn out as a failed collaboration with another composer… But today, I must admit, thanks to wisdom, this experience made me stronger and gave me the chance to meet Gilbert and the amazing musicians I’m with now! Plus, performing in both France & Belgium was an amazing opportunity to meet and discuss with the European crowd, enabling me to hone my musical skills while adding a new perspective to my artistic portfolio. Why l’m I talking about touring? Because being a musician is all about seducing new ears with your music in every parts of the world. But touring needs funds. And I am no Taylor Swift. (l’ll never have her beautiful blond hairs, height or her amazing career - at such a young age…but hey, why being so negative?, she’ll never have my natural big brown curly hair neither)…

OK l’m getting lost in my thoughts here. Let’s go back to my subject.

Touring yeah. OK before touring & presenting your songs, you have to create them. Creating my own musical universe, for me is expressing my ideas, which come alive in the form of stories and short films. French or English, it doesn't matter. Only heartfelt stories does. In my song Can you imagine? (The Killing of John Lennon) I told the story of my birth. Or the first time I died…It depends on how you read it… In the song Silk Stocking District, I told the story of a girl who won’t sleep her way to the top to succeed. Kind of a feminist song. OK, the first show I went to as a teenager was Alanis Morissette… I love to tell stories, autobiographical or not, but still heartfelt stories. But to share these stories, I have to record them…(cause I want more than my mom as a fan;)

(Now l’m getting to my selling pitch part of the blog.)

Writing great songs is only the first part, because these songs have to meet their ears, with recording and touring, because without ears to listen to, music looses all it’s meaning. The life of a musician is both on the road and in the studio. And the life of an independent musician is investing a lot of money to achieve your dreams. And often we invest without getting any money in return (remember l’m not Taylor Swift). So what if you could help? What if you could share my dream? That’s why I thought making a crowdfunding campaign would be amazing! The money raised will be use for both a mini Canadian spring tour and a mini album! Every dollars count, you can give 5$, 10$ or get a reward depending on the amount of money you give to the project; it can be an album, we can cover a song you request, and we can even make a private concert to your house, or in your backward (if you live near Montreal). Plus, your money will also serve to a charity, cause in music the heart and sharing matters. And not every people in the world have the chance to actually make music, because they don’t have access to the basics, which are the musical instruments. So the extra funds of this crowdfunding campaign will go to Instruments Beyond Borders (IBB) and the Landfill Harmonic Orchestra they support. They delivers musical instruments to youth orchestras in disadvantaged communities at home and abroad. By example, they help the Recycled Orchestra of Caetura, in Paraguay, where children play instruments made out of recycled garbage. and the St. James Music Academy in Vancouver’s Downtown East side, where up to 200  children receive free after-school music lessons from professional teachers. This means that you don’t have to play a Gibson of a Stradivarius to make music!

But still, to make music today, in the age of web 2.0, you still have to get access to exposure and minimal financial resources, and touring and recording with great musicians needs money. And you know, in the age of social media and web 2.0, sharing (my music, my blog) is also kind of (virtual) money. So I hope I’ve sell you my product, meaning my music, and that you are now inspired to share it, or even spend some money on my dreams in exchange of great rewards!

Thank YOU! (and a Big Thanks if you read this until the end;)

Greatly Troubling

I have watched this for over a year now. It is time that I weighed in, as I have a responsibility in this business to the many artists and music in general. I think this is a great look at the inside of what I see as a poison in the music industry. Read for yourself. As the owner of a music business, I do not see eye to eye with every artist I encounter, but would never speak so disrespectfully to anyone like this. This troubles me greatly.

Look, on one hand, if you are a dev...eloping artist, you need exactly that....development. Part of what you need to do is learn how to sell yourself and your music to people! There are many things to learn about doing that. You can't just JUMP into good favour with sponsors, grant people and fans. It is a process and throughout the process, as my father says, "water will find it's own level" However, selling tickets to just get people there and giving all the money to the promoter is GARBAGE!!!

It does not teach, offer incentive, direct, offer ideas towards putting on a great show, promote artists working together (quite the opposite, it promotes unhealthy competition between artists) or lead to anything AFTER the show. I am not a fan of artist competitions, as music is objective. What would happen if Neil Young was not famous and entered a singing competition today?

In my opinion the company listed in this, is merely a throw back to the way things used to be, with artists being used for the greater good of a corporate boss.

How About that Rise Up Tour?

Hey everyone,

How about that Rise Up tour.

Well for me, it was my first to many things.

1- Frist time in Ontario… where I was greeted as a good songwriter.

2- First tour… where I understood the real life of an artist on the road. One has to be prepared because the challenges are numerous and so are the joys.

3- First time where I've met so many Canadian songwriters… great connections were made and I hope to meet them again.

So in the end, my album is due late this summer and I can’t wait to share it with all of you.

See you in September!!

Introduction To Keats JP

Music is my life. And working towards a dream is a full time job (along with having
to earn a living). The new addition to my ‘dream chasing’ team is the Rosner
Management team and they have started a new chapter with me  - they have done
such a great job these last few weeks of educating me on the first steps to popular,
professional musicianship.

I had the pleasure of attending the ‘RISE UP TOUR’ show in Toronto which
proved to be not only entertaining, but also very educational – what do I want to be
doing in the future? What kind of show do I want to put on?

I am now in the process of moving apartments, but have also begun planning
my first fundraising performance or a ‘House Concert’  hoping to get started on
that NEW SINGLE. Makes me feel a little apprehensive, - and insecure for sure, and I
have no idea what I’m doing – but I’m learning.

My mom always says “You don’t have to know what you want… but you have
to figure out what you DON'T want.” I’m learning more about myself and my craft
everyday and I am so lucky to now be able to share it with my new founded friends
and team; but also with all of you.

Signing off for now,

Keats JP

Trail of Tears - Behind the Song

Recently, Trail of Tears was released to radio as my very first radio single. I'm a little behind on radio releases but I am so excited to finally get the ball rolling! So far, there are about twenty radio stations who have picked it up! I think that this is perfect timing. With my National Aboriginal Day performance coming up, and Trail of Tears on the radio, I've decided to post a video onto YouTube this Friday! As always, stay tuned on here and via my Twitter @SierraJamerson for everything #TeamSJ. Trail of Tears is a song written about the historical event of the same name.

Following the Indian Removal Act of 1830, members of the Cherokee, Choctow, Muscogee, Chickasaw and Seminole tribes were forcibly relocated from their traditional lands in southeast U.S to an area west of Mississippi, Indian Territory. Of the 16,000 who were moved, up to 6000 perished in the trek, much of which took place during winter. I have Choctaw ancestry on my mother's side but I wrote this song not only in honour of the Indigenous people who died during the Trail of Tears. It is also in honour of the Tahltan struggle to preserve our Sacred Headwaters from exploitation and resource accumulation by Shell Oil.

Many Tahltans still live on our traditional territory, downstream from where the proposed mines and environmental destruction were to take place. We still live off the land to a large extent, being so far north that store bought food and goods are quite expensive. My own grandmother and many other grandmother's risked their freedom in protest to protect this land, in turn ensuring that a natural area considered by scientists to be a major lung of the earth, would continue to live on. This sounds like ancient history, but it all took place about ten years ago, and continues to be negotiated to this day.

My elders have charged me with the responsibility to go forth and share the message of my people with the world, and I am pleased to do so with Trail of Tears. Look out for more celebrations of Aboriginal history and culture this Sunday, in Churchill Square with my band, on your radio dial, and on YouTube. Love, SJ

Check out the Video here --- If you enjoy, Please like it, leave a comment, and share. Thank You. ~Sierra~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svqrr1IGzTs

Meditations

Tomorrow's Unknown

Tonight I am just sitting here thinking to myself, I am blessed. Though life has been incredibly difficult at times, I keep my head up, staying positive. Who knows what tomorrow brings, we are always, always venturing into the unknown if you think about it. Usually we do it alone, 'cause we're so focused on our demanding, busy lives, and I get it; I live one too- I respect what you're going through, but sometimes we've got to slow down and take a moment. With that being said, every waking moment i give thanks for another day, another day to breathe, laugh, live, spend time with loved ones, the little family I've created. My beautiful wife, children. So no matter what the past has brought, or what tomorrow brings, I live for the things in life worth living for. Yes, everyday I work hard earning an income for my family doing what i have to do to maintain and live as comfortable as I can with what I have, but the materialistic items, well they mean nothing to me.

I just possess the things I have, for I have earned them, from working hard, because I can, not because I "love" them. We must live our lives for what they are truly worth: family, friends, children, the paradise around us- Serenity, Peace, Love, Harmony. For tomorrow is not known, and if we get to caught up in the chase of money, the stuff we have, needing more, and forget what's right in front of us, then who knows, it may all be gone tomorrow. Before you know it, you blinked your eyes and its gone. Take nothing for granted. Help a person out that needs it, be someone's ray of faith, change a life. If today you change one life, and yes one may not seem a lot to you but maybe tomorrow you change the lives of 2, maybe even 3 people? Start a chain effect, and we start to come together, and every day that we do it makes venturing into the unknown (tomorrow) not so scary, for we don't have to do it alone. Spread love, make peace, take nothing for granted and let us live as equals, in harmony, 'cause what if tomorrow never came and we spent our whole lives arguing?
