Bass player extraordinaire David Ruel, formerly of "Withering Curse" is branching out of his home province of Quebec!. His accomplishments are many and now he is looking to bring his talents to touring bands wherever they may be ! He is in a unique position to be able to pick up and hit the road for bands or solos that are in need of a part time bass player for tours or shows, pretty much wherever and whenever is needed. David Ruel is a professional musician who is always craving for new projects, challenges and opportunities. Throughout the years, David has been performing in a lot of varied situations both live and in the studios, allowing him to develop and sharpen his play style in many different musical styles including (but not limited to!) metal and hardcore and all of their sub-genres, rock, pop, blues, jazz, folk, disco, country, electronic and classical music. In addition to studying classical bass for many years at Laval University with double bass virtuoso Zbogniew Borowicz, David has also been teaching music, mainly bass and double bass, for over seven years as a private professor. With hundred of shows and lots of varied musical experiences under his belt paired with endless energy and an extremely charismatic stage presence, David would definitely be a great addition to any serious band or project!

Downie planning big things!

When I began writing music, ten years ago or so, I was surprised that songs really just
seemed to show up and that I was merely catching them as they came by. Yes, I have
taken songwriting classes at the university so I am well aware of the various song
forms. There is the typical verse, chorus, verse, chorus; the verse chorus, verse,
bridge, chorus; the verse, verse, bridge, verse, and then of course the hymn form, which
is basically all versus used mainly in classical, church hymns and maybe sometimes
jazz since many jazz tunes come out of musical theater. I never really cared much
about writing and sounding like anyone else and my song structure often varies
immensely. And it is often that my voice also morphs depending on the song I have
written, or rather what song has shown up. I wrote an acoustic pop/ jazz tune with all
verses, like the hymn form that one would ordinarily be done in the pop and jazz world.
One of my songwriting friends, after hearing this song, suggested that I should write a
bridge for the song. But in the end there was nothing else left to be said or expressed in
this song, so I chose to accept the song as it came to me. I came across this video of

A LUCKY MAN!

                                          

I am a lucky man. Why? Growing up listening to bands like Toto, Yes, journey and others, I decided at a young age that music was my passion! I played in bands and toured Europe, rubbing shoulders with some amazing artists and industry people along the way. I always wondered where it would take me. Today, at 49 years old, I am right where I was meant to be. Oh yes, for sure, I don’t play the bass like I used to, but hey, I have much to be thankful for. A 12 year old son who is the core of value in my life! Healthy parents at 81 years old!!!!! A girl that lights up my life every day and oh ya, I get the privilege of passing my contacts, knowledge and help to artists all over the world.! I am working on 6-8 international tours, working with EVERCLEAR  manager Paul Marshall, Stephen Wrench, founding member of Lynyrd Skynrd, a great team of professionals, sponsors and so many wonderful people, it would take forever to mention. Roger Daltry says the music business is dead! Ummmmm what? Not from where I sit. You see, the problem with that statement is that to me, if Roger is looking for things to be the way they were when he was in his prime, then it IS dead. However, I think it is merely changing and HE is dead! What are you making music for Roger??? Money only? I think you should slide over and let the next generation decide on how they will shape the business going forward. After the Titanic went down, we did not stop building ships, we simply learned how to build them better! That’s what is now happening! We are learning how to use the new world technology and it takes time to regulate. Back to why I am a lucky man. As the industry grows and changes, I am thankful that I can use my mind and talents in music. Every day is an adventure and no two days are the same. To me, that is why I am a lucky man.

This Time: "Covering" songs, Rise Up Tour & Studio Time

As Bob Dylan once said…"The Times They Are A Changin'"…But we are not in 1964 anymore…So more than ever, the indie artist has to be everywhere & do it all, with (often) so little money. Passion doesn't come with a price, so I keep going, for the love of music. And I try to "cover", let's say explore all the fields music has to offer.

I'm really excited about the month of June, for us it's the beginning of the summer, with great shows and exciting projects to come! This begin with the Rise Up Tour, in Montreal on June 2nd at Bar Le Ritz PDB a great venue for the indie music scene. On June 5th we travel to Quebec City for a show at Le District St-Joseph and on June 10th, we come back to Montreal to play as a duo at Taverne Reeves. June 10th will be a pretty buzzy day, since I do a live radio interview over the phone with a music station in Chicago and on this same day, June 10th, we launch 2 albums of covers, available on digital download on iTunes and other digital stores! I can say that from the 24 songs we cover there is plenty of choice for any music lovers from the 60's to the Top 40! And yes there is a Bob Dylan cover to stay consistant with my blog article!
